A Hidden Side

a hidden side is an artist’s book in the form of a video collage, through which a poem is written.

a hidden side is a book of the film and a film of the book, contained in a video as a text written all over Marcel Broodthaers’ Un Voyage en Mer du Nord, which is a voyage no longer.

The images in Broodthaers’ piece have been excised in this work, favouring the artefacts of his film, which amount to scratches, spots, leader, and lens dirt. a hidden side also contains the artefacts of reading, in remnants of pages and texts as images, writing into each other.

Broodthaers’ film becomes infected by a poem in a hidden side, speaking across spaces, bodies and books. The video houses the forms and referents of this infection, along with the associations that it structures to other books, films and events, and the connotations generated by its language.

The pages of a hidden side are filled with cells dividing, with borders that flex in its gutters, with bodies that transgress its bindings, and with structures that collapse in the margins.
